Brief History of Artists For Recovery

Artists For Recovery was founded in 1992, in affiliation with Resources for Human Development, Inc. and has been developed by and for people with psychiatric and/or addiction histories. Our program grew out of a support group that was formed both for mutual support and to develop alternatives. The founding members saw that there was a lack of viable options for the artists in that group, and for others like them. In Artists For Recovery, these people have proven their ability to build community for one another by sharing their creativity and emotional support.

We are proud to present a wide variety of performers, including many who perform original material. The cultural diversity of our organization is reflected in the selection of talent available. Our performers have kept their creativity intact against great odds. Their struggles may have been similar to those of the people you serve. We believe that this common bond will enhance the impact of their performances on your audiences.

Artists For Recovery is also a source of alternative information in mental health, such as nutritional, herbal and other wholistic interventions, as well as human rights and treatments issues. The range of information and expertise available is broad and progressive. Many of our presenters are activists in the consumer/survivor/ex-patient movement, so that their perspective and sensitivity are enhanced by their personal experiences. We also provide instruction in arts, crafts, writing and music, both in single workshops or in on-going sessions, for reasonable fees.
