A BRIEF NOTE OF INTEREST:
It has been estimated that one in three individuals will experience a mental health or substance abuse problem in their lifetimes. Many have great strengths in the arts, and few resources to support those strengths. Their difficulties are often compounded by isolation, ostracism and poverty. Their creativity has helped them to survive. The systems set up to serve them disregard their creativity, and tend to view them in terms of "illness" and "disability" instead of recognizing and valuing their strengths.
In Artists For Recovery, these people have proven their ability to build community for one another by sharing their creativity and emotional support. Present activities include weekly performances, jam sessions, workshops, peer counseling and support groups. Artists For Recovery also has sponsored performances at conferences, art exhibits and other venues, as well as composing journals of poetry and prose. The National Mental Health Performers' Network has chosen Artists For Recovery to receive artistic and technical assistance to start a theater company.
Artists For Recovery is working with other individuals and organizations toward development of a residential alternative for people in crisis, a wholistic alternative that would offer the option of intensive emotional support, as well as sound nutrition and evaluation of possible physical factors causing or exacerbating psychiatric symptoms. In the past few years, Artists For Recovery has sponsored meetings, workshops and a conference as part of our effort to create this alternative.
